For the child | A suitcase and a piece of hand luggage. That and nothing more was what the approximately 10,000 children were allowed to take with them, who were brought to safety from the National Socialist German Reich to Great Britain between Dec. 10, 1938 and Aug. 22, 1939. However, much heavier than the suitcases was what they had to leave behind – family, friends, memories, and their childhood. The children's transports only received a voice in the context of the memory culture of the Shoah much later. In June 1989, Bertha Leverton organized the first meeting of the Kindertransport children in London. The photo project by Rosie Porter and Patricia Ayre is a lasting memory that can be seen in excerpts at the kärnten.museum.
