Brief description

Opening, June 9, 2026, 6 PM
Exhibition, June 10 – July 31, 2026

The artistic practice of Paula Bruna Pérez is dedicated to ecological themes, the interrelationships between humans and nature, as well as breaking the boundaries between human-shaped culture and biological processes. In particular, with projects like Los otros residentes [The Other Residents], Mil ulls m’observen [A Thousand Eyes Observe Me], or Plantoceno [Plantazän], the artist raises central questions about the future role of humans within the ecological system and the dividing lines between humans, animals, and plants. She refers to concepts from Timothy Morton's book Dark Ecology (2017), in which the author argues that a true ecological consciousness can only emerge when we acknowledge the existence of different temporalities, spatial measures, and protagonists.

In her works, Bruna Pérez designs fictional scenarios that diverge from the paradigm of the Anthropocene – the current geological epoch dominated by human activity. Moving away from the hegemony of humans opens up a space for para-human forms of relationships, where plants and other life forms are considered equal actors in the ecosystem. The artist examines how our cultural narratives of nature and environment influence the perception of non-human entities and advocates for a new perspective on ecological and geological processes. Measuring the political and philosophical dimensions of the Anthropocene, she simultaneously highlights the necessity of changing the prevailing human-centered understanding of nature. For it is no longer just humans and their technology that should determine the fate of the Earth, but a multitude of non-human actors who together shape the planet. Only then, according to the artist, will it be possible to address ecological issues from a transdisciplinary and collaborative perspective and promote the formation of an alternative, sustainable aesthetics of nature. For the Lakeside Art Space, Paula Bruna Pérez is developing a new project titled Jaleo Forestal [Forest Rumble], which responds to the specific conditions of the exhibition site.

Paula Bruna Pérez (* 1978 in Spain) lives and works in Barcelona.
